Interdisciplinary and Applied Research

Research Fields and Directions

The research focuses on the convergence of European mountain research centres towards the development of a single method of mountain diagnosis and planning.

The Institute develops its research on the whole range of issues concerning life and space in mountain areas. It contributes to the orientation of science and research towards serving local communities and their difficult spaces such as mountain areas. Through its activities, the Institute focuses more on the fields of spatial engineering, i.e. methods and tools that contribute to the diagnosis of space and the design of effective interventions. In other words, it adapts action to the knowledge produced and accumulated by elected officials and territorial actors. Moreover, by combining territorial engineering with territorial intelligence, the Institute can effectively intervene in the fields of education, training and information and, in particular, participatory planning and innovative solutions for local issues in mountain areas. Through its training programs, the Institute will seek to train students and managers in the use of such tools and methods, publish methodological guides and publicize its work. Based on the interest of the thematic research groups, the Scientific Council has so far determined the following research areas and directions:

  • Sustainable development planning methods (new technological tools)
  • Soil intelligence and soil engineering
  • Exploitation of soil resources: guarantee systems, land reclamation, etc.
  • Agri-environmental management issues / Abandoned land
  • Governance issues
  • Expatriates: maintaining links and activating with places of origin
